Located at the southern end of Hatteras Island, the small town of Frisco, N.C. is perfect for those who seek a quiet beach getaway. At the northern end of town are Buxton and Frisco Woods, perfect for the hiker or jogger who likes the treed canopy of the maritime forest. At the southern end, the island narrows and it is possible to enjoy both the sunrise and sunset from the deck of your beach house.

While Frisco is small and laid-back, visitors and owners still have access to groceries, gas, restaurants, and modern conveniences while still being away from crowds and excess development. The village is approximately six miles long and it has only NC Hwy 12 entering and exiting. There are no traffic lights, and, even in the peak of the tourism season, there is no traffic for a relaxed, slower pace.

Frisco was one of the last areas of the Outer Banks to be developed for tourism. Eventually, visitors were drawn to the area’s quaint village atmosphere, seclusion, its miles of beaches, and its unique maritime forest.

Frisco has a character all its own. It is the perfect destination for someone who wants to enjoy the wide-open and uncrowded beaches. While Frisco is a great place to find peace and solitude, it also has many family-friendly attractions.

The Frisco Native American Museum

The museum is open year-round. The site is located near an ancient Indian village which is currently being excavated with some historical findings.  There are significant artifacts lining the wall and telling the stories of the Local Hatteras natives to the Cherokees and beyond. In April, the museum hosts a Powwow drawing guests from all over the country.

The Frisco Pier

The pier has taken a beating from hurricanes and is a bit shorter and missing some sections. It is remarkable that it is still standing after being abandoned in 2008. The National Park Service bought the pier in 2013 and some folks fear man rather than nature will take the pier down. 

Watersports

Frisco is well-known as a kiteboarding and windsurfing destination. The Pamlico Sound and favorable wind conditions attract aficionados from all over the world. Frisco offers exceptional sound access with less populated and more hidden launching points so visitors can find just what they are looking for.

Fishing from the surf or taking a charter for bigger fish is a favorite pastime for visitors and locals.

For fun family entertainment, Frisco has a go-cart track to get your competitive juices flowing.

History

Frisco was known as Trent until 1898 when the U.S Post Office changed the name.

General Billy Mitchell of the Army Air Service used the airstrip at Frisco to launch bombs against battleships off the Outer Banks on September 5, 1923.  This demonstration showed the effectiveness of airpower and led to the development of today’s Air Force.

Hatterasman Neighborhood

The Hatterasman Neighborhood is a small Oceanside community.  The community is centered on Runboat circle, which is a curved road running from NC Hwy 12 and back again. The community features traditional Hatteras-style cedar shake homes. The neighborhood is located about a ½ mile north of the Frisco pier and near the Quarterdeck Restaurant.
