The Outer Banks is a premium location for deep-sea fishing. Our beaches are just 12 to 15 miles from the Gulf Stream, giving you the opportunity to catch large fish like yellowfin tuna, blue marlin, white marlin, dolphin (mahi-mahi), wahoo, and sailfish. The Outer Banks is "The Billfish Capital of the World" and for good reason. Hundreds of blue marlin, white marlin, and sailfish are caught and released in our waters every year.
Marinas and Inlets
There are plenty of offshore charter boats ready to take you and your group out for the day. Charter boats head offshore through Oregon Inlet or Hatteras Inlet, and there are a few different marinas located near both inlets. Marinas in Hatteras include Albatross Fleet Marina, Hatteras Harbor Marina, Hatteras Landing Marina, Oden’s Dock, Teach’s Lair Marina, and Village Marina. On the northern end, there is OBX Marina, Oregon Inlet Fishing Center, Pirates Cove Marina, Shallowbag Bay Club Marina, Thicket Lump Marina, and Wanchese Marina. If you’re staying in Ocracoke, the Anchorage Marina would be your go-to for going off-shore. Some marinas even offer a service to cook your catch of the day for your group to sit and enjoy while reminiscing on the day’s exciting activity on the water.
What to Expect
Your offshore fishing adventure will be an all-day event. Even though we are in close proximity to the gulf stream, it still takes an hour or so to get there. Be prepared to leave the marina in the early morning hours around 5 a.m. and expect to return somewhere around 4 to 5 p.m. Most offshore charters will take up to six people, and the cost of the trip will often range from $1200 - $2,000+ before tips. You can also find more affordable boats. Choose the option that is best for you, your pocketbook, and the type of off-shore fishing experience you want to have. Charters are a great option for experienced and novice fishers alike, as the crew will have the boat fully prepared and ready to go. On most boats, you’ll just need to bring personal items like sunscreen, food, and drinks. The captain and crew will provide all the equipment and assistance when the fishing begins!
