Consider going a few rows back to find an affordable alternative. Oceanside homes are usually only a short walk to the beach and many do not require crossing any major roads to get there. Here are some of our favorite features of Oceanside Outer Banks communities in Corolla.
The communities selected on the list were selected based on multiple criteria. There are many communities that have fabulous resort amenities. These communities share the cost of the amenities between vacation home owners allowing them to offer more to guests at a more affordable price. Vacationers traveling with large groups or extended families appreciate the wide variety of activities so there is something to appeal to everyone in their group.
At the opposite end of the spectrum are communities with no shared amenities and no HOA. These are a good choice when you intend to include your own private pool and or hot tub; this way you are not paying for shared amenities your guest may not use as well as your own private amenities.
The property owner must pay for the installation and maintenance of the private pool and hot tub. The maintenance on a pool and hot tub is typically over $150 per week. In the Outer Banks market, homes with private pools and hot tubs tend to command a higher rent that allows them to pay the additional maintenance cost. Having all the guest amenities within the private vacation home is ideal for extended families or groups that want the most quality time together.
For many folks, the Atlantic Ocean is the real draw and nothing else matters. Well, most prefer to have air conditioning and to stay in a clean and comfortable home, but they do not want a private pool or hot tub. These “old school” beach goers just need the beach to refresh and rejuvenate. From relaxing under a beach umbrella to surfing or body boarding, a day at the beach is ideal escape from it all.
Ocean to Sound
Many of the communities in Corolla span from ocean to sound. While the beach and oceanfront is the largest draw for vacationers, increasingly many travelers seek out alternative adventures and go kayaking on the sound to view the birds and wildlife. Villas at Corolla Bay
The Villas at Corolla Bay is one of the newest communities in Corolla. This Oceanside community has quickly gained popularity with vacationers with the short walk to the beach and all the community amenities.
The development includes 57 villas with 4 bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. There is a centrally located community pool, bath house, shuffleboard, basketball court, horse shoes and a picnic area. Some of the homes in the community have private pools and hot tubs. This community also has sound access.

Villages at Ocean Hill
The Villages at Ocean Hill is the most northern community in Corolla before you reach the 4 wheel drive area. It is an ocean to sound community and includes excellent community amenities. There are two swimming pools; one is located on the oceanfront and the other is on Lakeside drive next to the fitness center. There are also two tennis courts that can be reserved in advance or take a chance with first come first served. Next to the tennis courts, are the basketball courts, volleyball/badminton court, shuffleboard, 4 square courts and play ground.

Buck Island is a delightful, intimate Oceanside community with 80 homesites, 18 Charleston Place homes and 14 duplex Key West style homes. Buck Island is located at mile marker 7 in the heart of Corolla. It has a very popular mix of amenities.
This gated community has lit sidewalks, a beach boardwalk that is private to residents and their guests. There are beach cabanas, equipment rental on site, tennis courts, basketball court, community pool with jetted tub and a playground. This community is located next to TimBuckII and Monterey Plaza for convenient shopping.
Crown Point is centrally located in Corolla near TimBuck II and Monterey Plaza and just south of Buck Island. It is a small community of 4 to 7 bedroom homes both Oceanfront and Oceanside. The community amenities include a Community pool, tennis court, and 3 beach accesses.
Whalehead Beach is an older established community in Corolla with generous lot sizes. It spans 3 miles along the Atlantic Ocean with 3 streets that run parallel to the ocean front. There are beach accesses at the end of every block. There are also parking lots near some of the beach accesses to make it easier for families bringing gear to the beach. The community does not have a home owners association or community amenities. Many homeowners have installed private pools and hot tubs to attract guests.
Pine Island is one of the most exclusive developments in the Outer Banks. It is located just to the north of Duck at the southern end of Corolla. To the west of the community is the 6,000 acre nature preserve owned by the Audubon Sanctuary with a 2.5 mile self-guided nature trail through the sanctuary. The preserved area keeps the sound views open and clear of development.
The Pine Island community was established with its own airstrip and recently Chartered flights have been added to the airport.
Pine Island has two community pools with one located on the oceanfront and the other on the north end of the community. Pine Island has community tennis courts available for residents and guests to use for free. In addition, the Racquet and Tennis club has additional facilities, including indoor tennis courts, workout facility, ball machine rental. The facility is available for an additional fee.
