To many people, Nags Head is the Outer Banks. Nags Head is the largest town in the Outer Banks, with 11 miles of oceanfront and 6.5 miles area within the interior. Nags Head earliest visitors date back to the 1800’s, but the town was not incorporated until 1961. Similar to today, early visitors flocked to the beach to escape the heat and enjoy the seaside location.
Nags Head has something for every water sport enthusiast due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and the sound; fishing, surfing, jet skis, boating, and more. With more than 40 public beach accesses and 6 accesses for the sound, it is easy to spend the day at the beach or sound with family or friends.
Nags Head is also the location of the tallest natural sand dune on the east coast. Jockey’s Ridge State Park is a great place to learn to hang glide, fly a kite or wear out the kids by running up and down the dune. There are also self-guided hiking trails and free programs and events offered throughout the season.
The historical Nags Head style of architecture, also known as The Unpainted Aristocracy, features homes with cedar shake, green roofs, hip-roofed porches, built-in benches and propped-shuttered windows. This style allowed early visitors to take advantage of the summer south west breezes and protect the home from the harsher north east breezes in the fall and winter. The generous porches, built in benches and windows with propped up shutters shaded the home in the summer and secured it for the winter. While this architecture is used elsewhere in the Outer Banks, Nags Head is where it originated.
A profitable real estate investment in Nags Head does not have to be Oceanfront. While oceanfront homes in Nags Head do command higher rents, they also cost more to purchase and maintain.
