Make a Low Country Boil to Eat Like an Outer Banks Local

Outer Banks low country boil

Looking for a fast, low effort delicious meal that is full of coastal flavor for your Outer Banks vacation or are you entertaining a large group of guests and need a crowd pleaser?  Look no further than the classic low country boil!

This one pot dish is a favorite by locals and visitors alike.  While the classic recipe is included below; there are infinite variations and it is easily adaptable for individual tastes and ingredients on hand.  Whatever your fresh catch of the day or what is available at the fish market or grocery store can easily be included.  If not everyone is a seafood lover then chicken breast meat chunks can also be included.  Want more vegetables? Add some baby carrots to the mix.

This is a good meal to prepare for a BBQ, party or when guests are arriving at various times. Although, once prepared and served, it seems to disappear quickly.

If you have a large group and your pot is not very large, you can also cook in stages and remove the prior contents before adding the next set of ingredients.  Cover previously cooked ingredients to keep warm.

Low Country Boil

1 tablespoon of Old Bay seasoning (can also include Zatarain’s crab boil)

5lbs new red potatoes (if larger potatoes used, cut into wedges)

1 bottle beer (12oz)

1 – 1 ½ teaspoons salt & pepper

1 sweet onion – cut into wedges

1 head of garlic – halved (optional)

3 (16oz) packages of cooked Chorizo or Kielbasa sausage, cut into 1” pieces

8 ears fresh white corn; husked and cleaned.  Cut or break each ear into 2 to 3 pieces.

5lbs crab meat pieces (or just about any other seafood)

4lbs shrimp, peeled and deveined

Directions

In very large pot, bring to boil beer, salt, water.  Add Old Bay seasoning, potatoes and onion.  Simmer for 10 minutes.  Add the corn, sausage and crab; cook for 5 minutes.  Add shrimp and cook for additional 3 to 4 minutes.  Remove from heat and let stand while covered for 5 minutes.

Drain off water and pour contents onto picnic table covered with newspaper or disposable cloth.  Grab a plate and enjoy.  Serve with cocktail sauce, lemon wedges, and melted butter.

Low Country Boil – Take Out Options for the Outer Banks

If you want to make things even easier, many restaurants in the Outer Banks feature this dish for takeout.  Sometimes, they are called steamer pots and feature all the great seafood the Outer Banks is known for.  Some of our favorites are listed below:

Ten O Six Restaurant – Kill Devil Hills

Located at MP 8.8 on the beach road, this restaurant lets you order your seafood boil online several different ways and you can customize it.

There are 5 main combinations (each includes potatoes, corn and shrimp):

  • Blue Crab
  • King Crab Leg
  • Lobster
  • Shrimp
  • Snow Crab

Once a combination is selected, you can also add additional ingredients for even more customization for your group:

  • Little neck clams
  • Crawfish
  • Oysters
  • Mussels
  • Salmon

Prices range from $19.95 to $35.95 for each combination.

Outer Banks Boil Company – Corolla, NC

This company will bring the boil to the beach, your home or you can get a pot to go for takeout.  The catered boils require at least a 24 hour notice.  They perform the setup, cook and serve the boil, bag up any leftovers and even clean up and remove the trash!  The price includes plates, forks, knives and utensils.  You don’t need to lift a finger, just sit back and be entertained.  They even bring the homemade cocktail sauce and fresh lemon.

Pricing is based on number of people.  The traditional shrimp boil is $23.95 per person with a $100 catering fee.  Some additional fees apply for groups over 25 and to cater on the 4 wheel drive beach.  There are add-ons you can select to expand the traditional shrimp boil (clams, mussels, snow crab and lobster tail). Cornbread muffins, NC pork BBQ, and coleslaw can also be added to your meal.

Their take out pot (includes the pot) is available for $22.95 per person.  Just add water and cook for about 30 minutes on a cooktop or grill.

Dockside ‘N Duck Seafood Market – Duck, NC

Located in Wee Winks Square in Duck is another location where you can get your boil (and the pot) to go and simply cook it back at your house.  This establishment calls it a “steamer pot” or “Down East Clambake” but it includes the traditional low country ingredients.  There is a two person minimum and they feature 3 combinations plus the option to customize your own (all combos come with potatoes, corn and seasoning, plus cocktail sauce, lemon and butter):
