Visitors and to Corolla and homeowners alike have no shortage of activities to choose from on vacation. But after hours of fun, sun, and excitement, there are many times when nobody feels like cooking a large meal. Thankfully, the selection of dining options in town is larger than ever before.
However quantity does not always equal quality, especially on the Outer Banks. Restaurants that are affordable, family friendly, have a great atmosphere, and serve delicious food are never easy to find. But one such hidden gem sits inside the Corolla Light Town Center with Uncle Ike’s Sandbar and Grill.
A true rarity, Ike’s is a restaurant that can be a destination for the entire day. Their breakfast menu is as well-known as their full lunch and dinner menu. And with live music, DJ’s, and karaoke scattered throughout the week during the summer, it is also a popular hangout for nightlife as well.
But never fear, the breakfast menu has many options for differing taste buds. Traditional choices like Pancakes, French Toast, and Biscuits and Gravy are all excellent. The Breakfast Lasagna is an Ike’s creation where eggs, bacon, and cheese are all baked together lasagna style and then smothered in sausage gravy. One of the breakfast highlights is the Crabby Benedict where lump crab cakes substitute for the traditional Canadian bacon.
Another popular choice for breakfast is the Chicken and Waffles. It’s so popular, you can find it on both the Breakfast and the Lunch/Dinner Menus. The Belgian waffle is stuffed with two strips of bacon, topped with fresh hand breaded chicken, and then covered with in sausage gravy. The perfect blend of breakfast and dinner in a single meal.
But if you are looking strictly for a dinner selection, the menu at Ike’s has something to satisfy everyone’s palate. You are sure to find plenty of local seafood mixed into regular American Style Fare. The appetizer menu includes Crabby Fries, French fries topped with crab meat, Old Bay Seasoning, and cheddar cheese and served with a red pepper aioli.
Another popular starter is the Firecracker Shrimp, crispy shrimp tossed in a homemade sweet heat sauce and served with your choice of dipping sauces. The only complaint is that you may end up ordering two helpings.
The rest of the menu is segmented with plenty of different salads, baskets, sandwiches, and burgers. But there are also roughly a dozen signature entrees including steaks, pastas, chicken, and seafood.
Perhaps the most famous entrée is the Fish Tacos. Two flour tortillas are stuffed with the catch of the day either blackened, grilled, or fried and served with lettuce, cheddar, mozzarella, homemade Remoulade and Salsa along with French fries.
There are also daily dinner specials that allow the cooking staff of Ike’s to get creative and experiment with ingredients of the season. One such special was dubbed the Filet Tower. A decadent selection with filet mignon topped with a crab cake, in turn topped with another filet mignon and another crab cake only to be capped with grilled shrimp. It was also served with homemade mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables.
There is also an extensive drink menu with plenty of entertaining names like the Electric Smurf, Carolina Dream, and Liquid Cannabis. The beer selection is also quite large with local and national favorites available by the bottle and rotating drafts.
With such a wide ranging eclectic food and drink menu, it is easy to see why dedicated fans flock to Ike’s every year they visit Corolla.
