35th Annual Rogallo Kite Festival: June 11 Jockey’s Ridge
Come see an amazing display of kites on Jockey’s Ridge, celebrating Francis Rogallo, the inventor of the flexible wing that is responsible for the development of stunt kites, power kites, and hang gliders. There will be activities for kids, free stunt kite lessons and more.
6th Annual Sunrise 5k & Little Crab Crawl: June 15 Jennette’s Pier
A family-fun 5k and 100 yard crab crawl on the beach. Top male and female runners in 1st-3rd placement will receive awards. The 5k starts at 7:30am and the Crab Crawl begins immediately after the 5k. Register here.
2nd Annual Soundside FunFair: June 15-18 Nags Head Soundside Event Site
A sound side carnival that is perfect for adults and kids. Open from 5pm-11pm on June 11th-18th. This event was a hit last year, with a Ferris Wheel, carnival food, and many other carnival style rides.
Sunset 5k & Carolina Pig Pickin: June 22 Jennette’s Pier
Run or walk this 5k on the beach, then enjoy some Carolina BBQ at the post-race party catered by High Cotton NC BBQ Restaurant. Individuals wishing to participate in the post-race BBQ party only can purchase a spectator meal ticket. Awards will be given for the top 3 male and female finishers, and finisher medals will be awarded to all contestants.
FREE Concerts on the Green: Thursday Evenings from June 22-August 24 Duck Town Green
Every Thursday, from June 22 to August 24, live bands will perform on the Duck Town Green stage from 6:30pm to 8pm. Coolers, picnics, pets and children are all welcome. Bring a blanket and chairs to lounge on.
Killer Dunes 2-miler & Fun Run: July 4 Jockey’s Ridge State Park
Run or walk the rolling dunes at Jockey’s Ridge State Park. This is a fun way to start off your 4th of July celebrations. And while 2 miles may seem short compared to a standard 5k race, climbing those dunes can be a challenge!
13th Annual Town of Duck 4th of July Parade
Don’t miss the Duck 4th of July parade! The parade route runs east on Scarborough Lane, loops north and then west onto Christopher Drive. After the parade, join the continued celebration at the Town Green for a community concert and watermelon provided by Green Acres Farm Market.
39th Annual Wright Kite Festival: July 15 & 16 Wright Brothers National Memorial
Don’t miss this free family-fun event at the Wright Brothers National Memorial. Come see the large kites on display, bring your own kite to fly, take a free stunt/power kite flying lesson, or bring the kids and let them make their own kite.
Outer Banks Watermelon Festival: August 3 Jockey’s Ridge Crossing
The annual Outer Banks Watermelon Festival is an awesome family-friendly event including games, food, face painting, tie-dye shirt making, arts & crafts, an inflatable waterslide, and you guessed it- lots of watermelon! There will also be competitions like seed spitting and watermelon eating with plenty of prizes to win.
2017 Sandbar 5k Race: August 6 Kitty Hawk
Enjoy a 5k on the beach, located at the historic “Old Station” public bath house in Kitty Hawk at MP 4.5. The first overall male and female finishers will receive an Outer Banks weekend vacation package! And the 2nd and 3rd place male and female finishers will win gift certificates to local restaurants.
OBX Summer Send Off: August 23 Roanoke Island Festival Park
A summer send-off festival on the sound featuring Outer Banks cuisine, artisan vendors and world class music. Proceeds will benefit the Mustang Outreach Program. Get more info here.
