The Fall season is a magical time to be on the Outer Banks. The air and the ocean are still warm, the breezes are cool, and on some days, you can have a perfect summer-like beach all to yourself. Celebrate this wonderful transition of warm days and cool nights by decorating your home with everything that inspires you about glorious Autumn and life on the beach!
Fall decorating means transitioning from the cooling tones of summer, such as our ocean-inspired blues and greens, into a feeling of warmth. This season immediately conjures images of cozy sweaters and blankets, evenings by the bright glow of a fire pit, and warming, more ‘dense’ foods like Butternut and Acorn squash, spicy chili, and the rich sweetness of deep orange pumpkin pie.
Bring all of these feelings of comforting, rich warmth and soft cushy textures inside by adding a Fall color palate to your home. Warm colors like reds, oranges, golds, burgundy, and deep, rich neutrals. Take inspiration from where you find these colors in nature: the warm golden sun, fiery oranges and reds of tree leaves in Nags Head Woods, and the rich yellows and golds of everyone’s favorite fall flower, Chrysanthemums, also called Mums.
Planting Mums in your garden, or placing them in pots on your front porch, is a beautiful and inexpensive way to add a vibrant pop of autumnal color to your home. These hardy plants can withstand even the coldest Fall night, and they typically only cost around $8 each!
We are all familiar with the sight of pumpkins on the porch steps, but there are so many unique decorating-with-pumpkins options! Pumpkins come in a variety of colors, from a soft creamy-white hue to an interesting lavender-grey. Try mixing a few different varieties on your front porch and around your front door, for an inexpensive, inviting, and eye-catching display.
In your living room, try switching a few of your summer-hued throw pillows for ones in warm, rich colors like pumpkin orange and deep burgundy. Or, if warm colors are simply not your thing, and will not coordinate with your existing decor, then adding Fall prints in neutral colors works beautifully as well!
Also, switching lighter-weight throw blankets with cozy, soft, heavier ones will add that inviting warmth that Autumn is all about. Whether you choose a rich, warm tone or a creamy neutral for your Fall throws, it’s all about the texture and the feel.
Spend time in nature, notice the colors and scents around you, and allow yourself to be inspired by what feels really good to you…what colors make you happy, what are your favorite fall foods, what are your favorite fall scents? Do you love cinnamon? Then consider bringing the rich depth of a cinnamon-brown hue into your home, maybe simply with a comfortable throw blanket resting on the arm of your couch. Find that feeling of happy inspiration, and bring that feeling into your Fall home decorating.
